The 3 Seconds That Decide Whether Your Pitch Gets Read or Deleted
☀️ Summer Gifting Is Open: Get Your Brand Into the Right Hands
Hello, Chatterbugs! 🐝
Everyone is obsessing over the subject line.
And yes, the subject line matters. But here is something I need you to hear: by the time a journalist decides whether to open your pitch, they have already made a judgment call based on three things that have nothing to do with what you wrote.
Three seconds. That is the window. And most brands are losing it before they even get a chance.
Here is what is actually happening.
👤 The sender’s name
Look at your outbox. Does your pitch land from “Chatterbox PR” or “Amy at Chatterbox” or “info@yourbrand.com” or just “Amy Bartko”?
Journalists are not opening emails from brands. They are opening emails from people. The sender name is the first thing they scan, and if it reads like a corporate blast, it gets treated like one. The fix is simple but most brands never think to do it: pitch from a real person’s name. Not a title. Not a company handle. A name.
If you are pitching yourself as a founder, use your full name. If you are working with a PR firm, that firm should be pitching from a person’s name, not the agency. Journalists want to feel like a human reached out to them. Give them that signal in the very first field.
👀 The preview text
This is the one that kills more pitches than anything else, and almost no one is paying attention to it.
Preview text is the snippet that appears right after the subject line in most inboxes. It is the first sentence of your email body, unless you have manually set it otherwise. And here is the problem: most pitch emails open with something like “My name is [name] and I am reaching out on behalf of [brand]...” or worse, “I hope this email finds you well.”
That preview text is doing the opposite of what you need. It tells the journalist immediately that this is a cold pitch, that it probably went to 200 other people, and that it is not worth their time.
Your preview text is precious real estate. Use it to lead with the story. Lead with the hook. Make the journalist feel in the first 8-10 words that what is inside is relevant to them specifically.
🕐 The send time
Tuesday through Thursday, between 9am and 11am in the journalist’s time zone, is your window. That is it.
Monday mornings are chaos. Friday afternoons are checked out. Evenings and weekends signal that your pitch was scheduled by software, not sent by a person who thought about them. And if you are pitching national media from the East Coast, you need to think in Eastern time, not your own.
This sounds like a small detail. It is not. A pitch sent Thursday at 10am ET to a New York-based editor lands in a very different mental state than the same exact pitch sent Monday at 7am. The pitch is identical. The open rate is not.
Here is the takeaway: before you write a single word of your next pitch, check your sender name, rewrite your first sentence to lead with the story, and schedule the send for mid-morning Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Those three changes alone will improve your open rates before you touch the subject line.
The pitch is the product. But the packaging is what gets it picked up.

Important Dates for June
June is a fuller month than most brands realize from a PR and pitching perspective. Here are the dates to know, the angles that go with them, and what to have ready.
🎂 Father’s Day — Sunday, June 15
Start pitching: Now. Gift guide editors at digital outlets are sourcing Father’s Day content right now.
Pitch angle: Products that make dads’ lives easier, products for the outdoorsy dad, tech for dads, wellness for men. If your product has a dad-adjacent use case, this is your moment. Keep the pitch tight: one product, one sentence on why it fits, a clean image, and a price point.
🌈 Pride Month — All of June
Start pitching: Now through mid-June for digital coverage.
Pitch angle: Brands with authentic community ties or inclusive product lines should be pitching Pride-forward stories now. Editors are looking for genuine representation, not rainbow-washing. If your brand has a real story here, lead with it. If not, let this one pass.
✊ Juneteenth — Thursday, June 19
Start pitching: Early June for any brand with an authentic cultural connection.
Pitch angle: This is a moment for brands with real ties to Black-owned businesses, cultural celebration, or community investment. Authenticity is everything here. Editorial teams are very attuned to surface-level pitches on this day.
☀️ First Day of Summer — Saturday, June 21
Start pitching: Now for digital. Mid-May would have been ideal for print (but digital is still very much open).
Pitch angle: Summer lifestyle roundups, outdoor entertaining, family activity products, travel-ready beauty and wellness. The hook needs to be specific to summer 2026, not just “great for summer.”
📸 National Selfie Day — Saturday, June 21
Pitch angle: Beauty, skincare, and tech brands with a social-first angle can use this for a fun, light-touch pitch to digital lifestyle and beauty editors. Keep it playful and very short.
One thing to get done before June 1: If you have not yet set up affiliate links for your products on LTK, ShopMy, or Amazon, do it now. More editorial teams are requiring affiliate-compatible products for gift guide and roundup coverage. If your product cannot be linked and clicked through, it is getting passed over for one that can.
✨ 🌟 Media Win: Jenna Dewan Loves Her Chatterbox Gifting Package! 🌟
One of our celebrity gifting campaigns hit a milestone this month when Jenna Dewan received a curated product package through Chatterbox and shared it with her audience of millions. With over 101,000 likes on the post, this is the kind of organic, credibility-building visibility that no ad spend can replicate.
✨ Why this matters: Jenna Dewan’s audience is made up of exactly the moms, lifestyle enthusiasts, and engaged consumers that baby, family, and lifestyle brands are trying to reach. When she holds up a product, her community pays attention. That is not a media mention. That is a personal endorsement, and it carries a completely different weight.
This is what celebrity gifting done well looks like: the right product in the right hands at the right moment.
Until next time, keep crafting stories that matter.
